The children gather, we light a candle, and the story begins like this:
There was a time when a family knew that a new baby was going to be born into the world. That family did all the things that families do when they are getting ready to take care of a new baby. They thought about how they would love that baby. They thought about how they would keep them warm, and safe, and fed, and cozy. One of the things the family did was they got a blanket ready for the new baby.
I show the children a tiny felt blanket.
Then the family waited, because it takes so many days for a baby to get ready to be born! More days went by and more days went by and then! Finally! It was time for the new baby to be born and that new baby’s name was-
I open my hand to reveal a very tiny baby. The children announce the birthday child’s name with great excitement, for they are the baby and this is their story!
We tuck the tiny baby figure into the tiny blanket and we look at their first photo, marveling, there they are.
