caterpillars

It’s time- we found the first round of caterpillars munching on leaves in the butterfly garden (“Slowly’s Garden”, as that nook is still called. A sweet gesture to the finger puppet and snail song the children know…). Can’t wait for them to do their thing. Neither can the kiddos! We’ve been watching them munch their leaves while we eat our snack.

It’s working well to do my mom’s trick (retired life science teacher, she’s the best!) of putting a coffee filter in the bottom of the caterpillar’s jar, and then changing that out daily when resupplying fresh leaves. Cheesecloth on top, lets the kids still see down into the jar with little problem. Raising them indoors is neat for the kids and safer for the caterpillars- last year quite a few were food for birds and spiders. Though as my nine year old pointed out, this year “we’re interfering with the cycle of life and what are the spiders gonna eat?” Ah. Sorry spiders.
